LEARN FROM DR. RICHARD SCHECHTMAN ABOUT THE FUTURE SMILE DIET – WHAT TO EAT WITH BRACES, By Westchester & Putnam County New York’s Top Rated Orthodontist
Fact or myth – Braces were designed to give you a better looking smile by straightening your teeth. You may be surprised to find that it is a myth! While having a nice smile is a great bonus, it’s not the medical reason to have your teeth straightened. Misaligned teeth and bites can lead to a host of problems. The teeth being too close together and rubbing can cause accelerated tooth decay, while teeth with large gaps often get food trapped in them for lengthy periods of time leading to gum disease.
If you have braces, you must do as best as you can to keep both your teeth and braces clean and operational. Oftentimes this means brushing your teeth several times a day more than you are accustomed to and giving up foods you have come to love – but, just for a brief time. You’ll often have to avoid foods that get stuck in your braces easily and foods that can pop brackets off just from the force of chewing.
During your treatment, it is recommended to eat foods that are easier to chew and are not high in sugar. For breakfast you can have scrambled eggs, soft fruit in yogurt, wheat toast with butter, or steel-cut oatmeal. A good lunch would include a soft fruit (like banana), a salad without nuts or croutons, and a glass of ice water. Warmed pita bread with hummus or string cheese with berries will make a brace-friendly snack.
For dinner, New York’s Top Rated Orthodontist recommends vegetables, and ensure they are cooked to a reasonable softness. Lean proteins like chicken or fish will be easier on the braces, whereas pork or steak will not be. While pork and steak are not necessarily on the list of foods to avoid, you’ll want to limit them as much as possible as they tend to be tougher to chew and more impacting to the braces. A soft dessert like pudding or ice cream is suitable, just be sure to thoroughly brush your teeth after.
Tenderness after Tightening
After appointments with Dr. Richard Schechtman, there may be tenderness in the teeth and gums. This is a normal part of the alignment process. Unfortunately, you’ll want to limit what you eat further to very soft foods until the tenderness subsides. A couple of good examples include:
What to Avoid Entirely
How you alter your diet will be up to you. However, there are a few foods you will want to eliminate entirely while you have braces. Some will be no surprise, while others may pique your curiosity. These foods are:
Overall, it is recommended to keep your diet healthy and avoid high sugar foods. Your braces have a lot of nooks and crannies that will be difficult to clean with brushing and flossing alone. If left improperly cleaned, it can lead to discoloration or decay. To avoid a lengthy treatment with Dr. Schechtman– eat right and brush frequently!
